Boyd and Bee (2008) define human development as "the scientists'
study of age-related changes in behavior, thinking, emotion and
personality." Though you may not have chosen to pursue a career in this
area of psychology, share why you feel it is important to study lifespan
development. If applicable, use examples from your personal or
professional life to support your discussion. Offer examples of how you
may be able to use what you will learn in this class in your personal or
professional life.
In your answer, include the following:
- Either: Refer to and integrate ideas presented in
the text and supplemental information. Cite the textbook at least twice within your discussion.
- Or: Cite at least one scholarly resource from the
Capella library to support your discussion. Do not use Internet Web
sites such as Wikipedia.

| Hello Class,
The Lifespan perspective maintains that important changes occur during every period of development and that these changes must be interpreted in terms of culture and context in which they occur (Baltes,Reese,& Lipsitt, 1980). The study of lifespan development is crucial to fully understanding the psychological aspects of how individuals progress and cope developmentally with various situations throughout the course of a lifetime.
Theorists and researchers classify age related change according to three broad categories: the physical, cognitive, and social domains. They also refer to the major periods of development: prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood (Boyd, & Bee, 2009). Learning about the domains and periods of development can better help us to understand and evaluate the stages of every individuals growth and can be beneficial knowledge in both our personal lives and professional careers. For example, as a mother, understanding the stages of development her children will go through, as they go through them over time, can really help aleviate a lot of stress and anxiety about the unknown experiences that come along with raising children. Career wise, as I am looking to become a juvenile probation officer after graduation , such knowledge will better help me understand the adolescent mind and assist me in becoming a well educated officer with the psychological background to be able to work with problem children and try and help get their lives back on the right track again.
